Introduction Note

Welcome to the first newsletter of the VANAHEIM European project. VANAHEIM is a collaborative project (Large-scale integrating project), funded by the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013.

From single camera and monitor to complex heterogeneous surveillance networks with hundreds of cameras, microphones and multiple network video recorders, surveillance systems are nowadays increasingly deployed. However, when dealing with large infrastructure, the primary role of automatic surveillance systems is usually to handle very specific security issues (e.g. monitoring of track rails between metro stations) and generate recorded material for a posteriori investigation (mainly for clarifying what happened after an incident and/or for forensic evidence), while less frequently to detect events when they happen, or collect statistics about activities and identify trends of interest in the data.

In this context, the main technological objective of VANAHEIM is to show how heterogeneous networked surveillance systems can benefit from the modelling, understanding and learning capabilities inherent in cognitive approaches to improve their effectiveness and go beyond today’s CCTV solutions.

Project Objectives & Innovations

VANAHEIM aims at studying and integrating innovative audio/video analysis tools in CCTV surveillance platforms typically in use in urban transport environments (metro and railway stations).

VANAHEIM gathers a multidisciplinary team of 8 partners with complementary skills (Computer vision & audio processing researchers, Surveillance system designer, Public transport operators and Human behavior researchers), which study innovative surveillance components in the following areas:

Automatic sensor selection for videowall management
Human-centered monitoring using audio/video analysis
Long-term statistics building for planning applications

Automatic sensor selection use-case: Most of the time, videos from large surveillance network are never watched. For instance, in the case of Turin metro, 28 monitors are used in the control room to supervise more than 800 cameras; the probability to watch the right streams at the right time is thus very limited. Consequently, along with operator-based protocols to visualize and browse the video networks, there is a need for automatic and content-based selection systems that provide surveillance operators with the most salient and informative data streams within an adaptive real-time process. Additionally, the need for such unsupervised selection processes is even more explicit when dealing with audio streams, for which “mosaicing” of data is not possible due to the transparent nature of sounds. VANAHEIM User-Board

The User-Board consists in representative of - CCTV end-users community (security/safety operators, public infrastructure managers…), - CCTV system designers, manufacturers and suppliers and - Intelligent Video Surveillance (IVS) solutions providers. It has a dual role in VANAHEIM: an internal role to advise on and review the developments that take place within the project, and an external role to liaise with the stakeholder community.

  • Active in CCTV/IVS or Urban transportation area ?
  • Interested in innovative CCTV/IVS specifications or evaluations ?
  • Want to be invited to on-site demonstrations ?

Be part of the User Board, and advise on and review the project developments; by subscribing to VANAHEIM User-Board, you will be informed of the project progresses, be invited to perform exclusive review of the project developments, and be invited to on-site demonstrations (Turin & Paris), possibly with coverage of your costs.
